he New Jersey Roofers Unions endorsed former State Senate President Steve Sweeney for governor Thursday afternoon.
The endorsement is the latest labor support for Sweeney. The Democrat has also received the support of the longshoremen’s union, the carpenters’ union, and Sweeney’s own ironworkers union.
“We believe Steve Sweeney is the leader our state needs,” Shawn McCullough, the business manager of Local 30, said in a release. “His track record of fighting for workers’ rights and ensuring access to apprenticeship programs will not only enhance our industry but also uplift all sectors within our community.”
Sweeney, who casts himself as a fighter for vulnerable workers in the state, worked as an ironworker before his time in politics.
“We proudly endorse Steve Sweeney for Governor. His unwavering commitment to improving workers’ rights, strengthening our middle class, and investing in our communities reflects the values we hold dear. Together, we can build a brighter future for all New Jersey families.” David Critchley, the business manager of Local 4, said in a release.
