State government manager’s union endorses Sweeney for governor

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 30, the state government manager’s union, is backing Steve Sweeney for the Democratic nomination for governor next year – a rare endorsement for a state employee union that has remained largely apolitical.

“While many individuals contributed to our progress, it is essential to acknowledge the efforts of former Senate President Steve Sweeney in getting the legislation that allowed us to organize signed into law,” said Alfred Laubsch, the union business manager. “This pivotal bill was passed during the final days of the Corzine Administration and faced strong opposition from incoming Governor Chris Christie.”

Laubsch said that when the union was organized in 1992, there was resistance to its approval.

“Even in the face of Christie’s staunch opposition, Sweeney remained a steadfast advocate for wage equality, which ultimately led to Corzine signing the bill on his last day in office,” Laubsch said.

The public sector manager’s group was formed in 1992, but they had no collective bargaining rights until Sweeney, then the Senate Majority Leader, helped push through a bi-partisan bill to recognize the new IBEW Local 30.
